The message I get when trying to file with the TurboTaxFree is that Turbo Tax Deluxe is required for my tax situation. Apparently Based on what I told them, the TurboTaxFree doesn't include the forms I need. That is about as vague as you can be. What forms do I need? As far as I'm concerned, with the information provided, my return is a simple one.
To the moderator: Being told to read who is eligible to use the free version is unhelpful. I've read it several times, which I why I believe my tax situation only requires the free version - not an upgrade.
@Susan05 Do you have a T4 or T4a slip on your return? Those slips sometimes have donations or medical expenses on them. Also, bank interest that's not included on a slip would also prompt an upgrade.
If you used Auto-Fill, that might bring in information that would make you ineligible to use the Free version (slips, carry-forwards).
If you transferred your TurboTax return information from last year, that might have also brought in carryforwards (medical, donations, employment expenses) that make you ineligible to use the Free version. Also, when you use the transfer function, you are automatically put into the same version you used last year, so if had Deluxe last year, you would be put into Deluxe this year. If this is the case, you can start a new return from scratch to be able to use whatever version of TurboTax you want. To do this, select "Start a New Return" from the left side menu. Then click on the "Create A Different Return" button.
