Why is there someone else's name in the Return Name?

    This happened to me too (January 2023) -- upon opting to import my data from last year's return, the personal information that came up about me was all correct, but someone else's name was at the top of the page.

     

    tl;dr -- the process for getting this problem fixed has been unacceptable.

     

    I searched in the "Help" section of TurboTax and the knowledge base article that came up about the same issue (from September 2022) said to call number "xxx-xxx-xxxx," which was as helpful as it looks. I took a screenshot of  the problem with my return, blacked out my personal information, circled the name that shouldn't be there, and emailed it and my description of the issue to [email address removed]. I also took a screenshot of the inadequate help entry from the knowledge base.

     

    A day later, I had not received any confirmation that my email had been received, let alone read by a human, so I called [phone number removed]. I spoke to an agent for 45 minutes and he told me that he had no idea if the email I sent had been received, and made notes for his supervisor to have someone look out for the email I sent and  give me a support ticket. There was no way for me to send him or his supervisor my screen shot or email or for them to pass me on to the security team. I also tried to use three different browsers (ad blockers disabled) to allow screen sharing of my TurboTax screen, and none worked.

     

    Today (the next day), I received an automated email message saying that my ticket was closed. Nobody had contacted me about the issue I reported. I tried calling a different Intuit help number, [phone number removed], and got a different agent. This agent got me to start the process to import my 2021 data into a new return and confirmed that the issue with the wrong name appearing with my personal information has been resolved. The agent is a customer service agent who does not know what exactly went wrong, only that she had dealt with the same issue at least three times before. She said that no clients' personal data has been leaked or damaged, but because she could not explain how she knew that, I was left unsatisfied by the process.

     

    Clearly this issue with the wrong name coming up with people's personal information has been going on for many months. Although the issue may (?) have been fixed with my return, it is likely to occur for other people. Not only that, but the process Intuit has in place for addressing customers with this issue is UNACCEPTABLE. There should be a clear and simple process in place for security-related complaints to be escalated to the security team and for confirmations of that contact to be sent to customers. Customers who report security incidents should also be contacted ASAP by agents who know the nature of whatever has happened to their data. Customers need to know that their information is safe, especially for such private information as is contained in tax documents. Regardless of whether there has been an actual data breach, the appearance of a data breach is damaging to the reputation of TurboTax. It would have been (and still can be) very easy for someone with similar experiences to mine to post screenshots of the problems -- both problems filing and problems with the help process -- on social media and/or send them to news sites. I would never have chosen to use TurboTax if I knew about this sort of problem before I became a customer. I am also considering switching tax software providers because of the way TurboTax has handled my complaint.

    This is clearly an issue as I have the exact same experience as described above today. Does Intuit assign a random person's full name in the Return Name at the top?? 

    I've used intuit for a decade and don't  remember ever seeing this. Even though my name and address below are correct, I'm not confident in continuing my return until this is resolved.
