Question

I am a non-resident living in Japan, earning no money in Canada, but my TurboTax return says I have to pay tax. Why is this?

All of my income is from my Japanese employer, going into my Japanese bank account. I only earned around $20,000. Surely I shouldn’t have to pay tax in Canada as a non-resident?

Do you have any connection with Canada that would make you a resident of Canada? (residency status)

    For example,
    - Owning or leasing a home in Canada for a long term
    - A spouse or common-law partner who lives in Canada
    - Dependents in Canada

Other factors they might consider include:
    - The amount of time you spend in Canada
    - Your plans for future travel or permanent location
    - Whether you have Canadian bank accounts, a driver’s licence, passport and provincial health insurance

Your tax obligations depend on your residency status which is determined by the CRA on a case-by-case basis.

If you are unsure if you need to pay tax, you’ll need to contact the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) and confirm. You can call the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) at 010+800-622-6232-1 (for Japan)
