Tax Credit

A friend filed our taxes & forgot to include our tax info from marketplace, which put us on the reject list. Then, because my husband received a bonus for his years of service as a teacher, that he PAID taxes on, they’re taking the bonus out of our taxes. Is this allowed? We’ve filled out the 8962 form & it’s been weeks & still haven’t heard a thing. What can we do, if anything. I think it’s crap that he has to pay his bonus back to marketplace! He’s the one that worked 25 years to get it! Now is the last time we need more money taken from us! How can we find out if they received our info, since we can never get a live person on a phone with us.

It depends.

Were your required to mail Form 8962 to the IRS?

If so, the processing centers are closed at the moment due to the social distancing requirements currently in place.  However the IRS has some operations open as needed.

Please see the attached link for IRS operations.   You may be able to try to contact the IRS Taxpayer Advocate Service department for assistance.

In regards to the bonus, what do you mean by they're "taking the bonus out of our taxes"?  Do you  mean they are assessing additional taxes on it?  Did you report it on your return?

All income and withholdings should have been reported on the return you filed.  If they are assessing additional taxes, it is possible not enough money was withheld from his bonus income.

We didn’t report the bonus to marketplace & it increased our income so, they’re making us pay that tax credit back. I just need to know if they received our papers we faxed so we at least know things are in motion.
