1099-NEC from state of CA

I live in Texas and I did some contracting work for a company in the state of CA. The income from the 1099-NEC was less than $4000. Do I need to pay tax in CA?

Generally, you must file an income tax return if you’re a resident, part-year resident, or nonresident and:

  • Are required to file a federal return
  • Receive income from a source in California
  • Have income above a certain amount

See this page on the California tax agency's website. The income level you mentioned is below the filing threshold for nonresidents.
