Question

529 Distributions

I entered my 529 Distributions from my 1099-Qs.  I had education expenses in excess of those distributions.  Why was a small portion of income included on the Other Income page in my 1040.  I thought that all distributions would be not taxes if used for education.

I would appreciate anyone's help.

After you enter the 1099-Q, enter the expenses in Expenses and Scholarships section under Education.

Thank you for the answer. I have tried that and it resulted in a small portion of the distribution being treated as income. I entered expenses in excess of the 1099 Q

Have you tried this in turbo tax? Wondering what would cause some of the 529 distribution to be called income.

Are you claiming other education credits? If so, you can't use the same expenses for both.
