Question

Do I need to create a "business" to file a 1099-NEC? I'm considered self employed because I worked for company for one week in 2022.

I worked for a family member and was sent a 1099-NEC. While filling out the information for the NEC, there were spots for me to add information for "my business" but unsure how to add information that doesn't exist.

You are a business in the IRS's eyes.

You do not have to carry on regular full-time business activities to be considered self-employed.   This is non-employee compensation.  You were contracted to do a job, not employed to do a job.  You will need to file a Schedule C for Business Income and Expenses and pay Self-Employment tax on this income.
