Every year I file with my normal W-2. This year was a bit different. I made 35k extra cash with Uber. After research, I realize when I filed my W-2, I didn’t include 1099

You will need to Amend Your Return to include the 1099 income and fix your state.  

After you start the amend process, select the following:

1. Federal
2. Income and Expenses
3. Show More next to Self-Employment
4. Start next to Self-Employment
5. Yes, to you have any self-employment income or expenses
6. Enter the type of self-employment work you do and you can select that you use your name for your business
7. Click through a few more screens and you will get to a screen that says "Your XX info"
8. Click Looks good
9. Then you will come to a screen that says Let's enter the income for your business.  It will give you the option of 1099-NEC or Other self-employed income including the 1099K , cash and checks.  Here is where you will enter the money you receive.
10. If you do not select one, it will not let you enter your income
11. Enter your self-employment income on the next screen
12. Continue and on the next screen click add expenses.  This will allow you to enter your mileage and other expenses related to Uber.

This income will be reported on Schedule C which is part of your overall tax return. This also means you will be subject to SE Tax.  If you did not pay SE Taxes in 2024, and if you plan to do this again in 2025, it may be a good idea to make  quarterly estimated payments to cover your SE taxes of 15.3% and avoid penalties.

Taking Business Expense Deductions

Do you mean that you already e-filed a 2024 tax return with your W-2 income but did not include the Uber income?   If that is what you did, you are going to have to amend your return to include the self-employment income.   That will require you to upgrade to Premium software, so expect to pay the difference between the software fee you paid originally and the fee for Premium.

Wait until your original return has been fully processed before you amend, and make sure you have saved a pdf of the original return before you amend. (If you do not save it as a pdf, the amended return will overwrite the original, and the original will be lost forever)

Do not expect quick results from amending. It can take four months or more for the IRS to process an amended return.

The rideshare (Uber) income is self-employment income, for which you will owe self-employment tax for Social Security and Medicare, as well as ordinary income tax.  

If you have self-employment income for which you will pay self-employment tax for Social Security and Medicare,  you will need to use online Premium software or any version of the desktop software download so that you can prepare a Schedule C for your business expenses.
