You can enter your 1099-NEC so that it flows to Line 8z, Other Income, instead of going to a Schedule C. It is important to note that if it is considered Other Income, you will not be able to deduct any expenses that relate to your 1099-NEC income.
Additionally, for tax purposes, self-employment income includes any part-time businesses or "side work" performed in which you are in business for yourself, rather than another person. You are also considered self-employed if you engage in business-like activities where you intend to make a profit.
If you are not self-employed, please follow the steps below to enter your Other Income 1099-NEC:
Open your return.
Search for 1099-NEC with the magnifying glass tool at the top of the page.
Click on the Jump to 1099-NEC link at the top of the search results.
Edit your 1099-NEC.
Continue past the information entered.
Describe the reason for the 1099-NEC.
On the screen Does one of these uncommon situations apply? answer This is not money earned as an employee or self-employed individual, it is from a sporadic acitivity or hobby (this is not common).
To confirm this was completed correctly, please follow these steps to see your federal forms:
Open your return.
Click on Tax Tools on the left-hand side.
Click on Tools.
Click on View Tax Summary.
Click on Preview my 1040 on the left-hand side.
Search for Schedule 1 - Additional Income & Adjustments to Income.
Go to Line 8z.
