Question

I am a first responder and received a state of florida check. I recieved a 1099-NEC for federal taxes. How do I claim this? Turbotax has me adding it as self employment.

If this work as a first responder was performed by you but not part of a business, then you would report the income as other income. You would need to report this income as self-employment income only if being a first responder was something you did on a regular and continuous basis or if you held yourself out as being available to perform work of this type.

To enter other income in TurboTax online, click on Wages & Income, scroll down the page to Less common income, click on the drop-down arrow and select Miscellaneous Income. From the list, select Other reportable income and respond to the questions on the screens that follow.

I work full time for county government. We received a state stimulus payment and we received a 1099 for it.

The state stimulus payment is not considered self-employment. It can be entered as other income without having to pay self-employed taxes.

Sign in to your TurboTax account.
Click on Federal Taxes tab.
Choose Wages and Income.
Scroll down to Other Common Income
Select 1099 -NEC
Enter the 1099 NEC information'
Then it asks for a description of the income. Give it the proper description.
When you reach a page that says Does one of these uncommon situations apply?
Select This is not money earned as an employee or self-employed individual, it is from a sporadic activity or hobby (this is not common).
This will then be taxed as common income and not business income.
