Question

I am not self-employed. I pay for my family's health insurance out of pocket after taxes. Can and if so how do I deduct this?

Health insurance premiums are an itemized medical deduction if you itemize. You can only deduct an amount of total medical expenses greater than 7.5 percent of your AGI.

Yes. You can deduct your family's health insurance cost if you itemize using Schedule A. Follow these steps to entry your insurance cost.

  1. Open TurboTax.
  2. "Pick up where you left off."
  3. Go to the Federal section and select Deductions & Credits.
  4. Scroll down to "Medical Expenses" select Edit/Add.
  5. Continue answering the questions.
