Question

I have a 1099-Misc for a summer job that was paid by the hour. Only box 3 is filled. In Review, ttax wants me to add a schedule C, which I don't have. What should I do?

Turbotax says "A Link to Schedule C or another form is something we need to get your info in the right place. Here's what to do: [...] make sure to complete all of the info."
I completed everything but ttax still says "check this entry". Should I just ignore it? My 1099-Misc only has box 3 filled and the payers and recipients info, everything else is just 0.

To clarify, what is the nature of the income that generated this 1099-Misc?

I am a Ph.D student and as we do not get a stipend over the summer, I got paid per hour for the institute I am working for. So basically I continued my work, just my payment structure changed. I would tell them how much I worked and what I did, and they paid me accordingly.

Is it self-employed? And does it mean that I have to delete the 1099-Misc in the non-selfemployed section?

You need to decide if the 1099-MISC is a Fellowship or not.

Fellowship grants can be reported on a W-2 or 1099

If considered a Fellowship it could be entered on your 1040 line 1, but there is no easy way to do that using TurboTax with it having been reported on a 1099-MISC, in which case enter it as Other Income.

If it was non-employee compensation, report it as Self-Employment.

Ask the institution what type of income they consider the payments.

Sounds like it is self employment income.   You have to fill out Schedule C for it and pay self employment tax.

You can enter Self Employment Income into Online Deluxe or Premier but if you have any expenses you will have to upgrade to the Self Employed version or use any of the Desktop CD/Download programs.
