Question

I have a 1099-nec from a lawsuit settlement. It won’t let me file unless I input a schedule c. Boxes 2-7 are empty.

Do I input lawyer fees I had to pay anywhere? How do I input schedule c without selecting self employment

You may wish to review your entries for Form 1099-NEC. Did you check the box for "lawsuit settlement" on the page "Does one of these uncommon situations apply?" Checking this box will report the income on Form 1040 Line 8z "Other Income" and does not generate a Schedule C.

You will also need to check yes or no for the question about back wages. If the settlement was for back wages, you will be given a box to enter the amount of back wages included in the settlement. This amount is deducted from the total to reduce the taxable income on Line 8z. Otherwise, the full amount is reported.
