It may be helpful to know the type of income you were trying to report. For example, if you are entering a 1099-NEC, TurboTax will assume you are self-employed and thus, you are being directed to prepare a Schedule C, Profit or Loss From Business. The IRS defines a self-employed person as:
"If you weren't an employee of the payer, where you report the income depends on whether your activity is a trade or business. You're in a self-employed trade or business if your primary purpose is to make a profit and your activity is regular and continuous."
The following IRS link will provide additional information that may help you decide whether you are self-employed.
If this work was performed by you but not part of a business, then you would report the income as Other Income.
Here are the steps to follow if you decide to report your income as Other Income:
To enter other income in TurboTax online, click on Wages & Income,
scroll down the page to Less common income, click on the drop-down arrow and select Miscellaneous Income.
From the list select Other reportable income and respond to the questions on the screens that follow.
On the screen, Other Taxable Income, you may see information indicating that you should not report your 1099-MISC in this section. If you have a 1099-MISC, just ignore that statement and enter your information.
If you are using TurboTax CD/download, the process is similar. After selecting the Personal tab, and the Personal Income tab, scroll down the screen to Less Common Income, and select Miscellaneous Income. Enter your information.
Reporting income as Other Income will appear on Schedule 1 to Form 1040 and also on Form 1040, line 8 as Other Income.
