Question

I need help filing a 1099-NEC form. It's considered income correct? But is it considered self-employment income/expenses?

Yes it is considered income. It will either be under the Self Employed Section or under Other Common Income. Depending on why you received the Form 1099-MISC will determine which section it should be posted under since both are treated a different way. If you received Form 1099-MISC for a work you did/side gig/freelance you may have to enter it under Self Employment Section since you are required to pay Self-Employment Tax on it. If the Form 1099-MISC is for example for a Prize or award then it will be reported under Other Common Income since its not subject to Self Employment Tax.

If you provide more information on why the Form 1099 MISC was issued, we can provide more information.

To file it as Other Common Income, please follow the steps below:

  1. Click on Federal > Wages & Income.
  2. Scroll down to the Other Common Income section.
  3. Click on the Start/Revisit box next Form 1099-MISC.
  4. On the screen Did you get a 1099-MISC?   Yes
  5. Enter the information from the 1099-MISC.

  6. On the following screens, answer the following questions:
    • Did it involve work that's like your main job? No.
    • You got it in 2021
    • No, it didn't involve an intent to earn money

 7.  Continue through the rest of the interview screens. The income will appear as Other Income.

To to file it as Self Employment Income, please follow the steps below:

  1. Click on Federal > Wages & Income.
  2. Scroll down to the Self-Employment section.
  3. Click on the Start/Revisit box next to Self-Employment Income and Expenses and enter the information accordingly.
