It may be because of your self-employment (Social Security) tax. Your self-employment income is subject to a self-employment tax of about 15% of your net self-employment income. You aren't allowed to deduct anything against it, so even if your income is too low to require income taxes to be paid, you can still end up owing self-employment tax.
