Question

I received a 1099-NEC from the teamsters union. Do I need to include it in my income? Its Union dues reimbursement for being a shop steward.

Yes, you should report the amount shown on Form 1099-NEC in your income. If the Union issued you a Form 1099-NEC, they are treating you as having been compensated for work done as a nonemployee or contractor of the Union.

To report the income from Form 1099-NEC in TurboTax:

  1. Sign in and open or continue your return
  2. Search for 1099-NEC and select the Jump to link
  3. Answer the questions and continue through to enter the information from your form
    • If you have multiple 1099-NECs to enter, you can select +Add Another 1099-NEC on the 1099-NEC Summary screen

Depending on your answers to the questions in this section, and the amount of your income, you could be subject to self-employment tax on any net earnings and could deduct any related expenses. If this was a one-time payment and you don't regularly do this type of work, you aren't considered self-employed and won't be subject to the tax.

See this article for more information on this topic from TurboTax.
