Question

I received a 1099-NEC, however, I was an employee. How would I go about filing this? I worked as a tutor for a small tutoring business.

So technically this is not my business to file as a self-employed.

The 1099-NEC form specifically reports Nonemployee Compensation.  If the company did not withhold payroll taxes from your periodic payments, this is the correct form, and you are considered self-employed by the IRS.  If you did have payroll taxes deducted, you need to contact your employer to have them correct the form sent to you as per the Instructions for Recipient on the back of Copy B of the 1099-NEC you received.

If you received this form correctly, you can follow these steps to enter your self-employment income.  Also, be sure to review What self-employed expenses can I deduct? for deductions you can take against the income.
