Question

I was in an undergrad research program and received a stipend, but the univ. did not give me a 1099-MISC. Do I need to include this and how?

I was in an undergrad research program at a university different from where I am an undergraduate student. I received a stipend from the program. I was told that "I would not receive a 1099-MISC form as the univ. was not required to report." I am unsure if I need to include this or not? And if so, how and where would I include this? Thanks in advance.

If the stipend was for tuition and books then it is not taxable and you don't need to report it on your tax return since your didn't receive a 1099 form reporting it.

Otherwise, you can report it in TurboTax by working through the Education section (in Deductions and Credits) where you will find Expenses and Scholarships (1098-T). Work through that section by indicating that you did not receive a form 1098-T and indicating that you received scholarship income. When you enter the stipend as scholarship income, it will show up on your tax return in line 1 as wages.
