Question

I was living in another state in which I received a W2. I moved to another after I married and was self-employed with 1099-NEC. Do I file 2 part-year state tax returns?

Can you clarify which states you lived in?

If both you and your husband both lived in Nebraska and then moved to Iowa, you would both file a part-year return for each state.

If you lived in Nebraska by yourself and your spouse always lived in Iowa:

  • You can file a part-year resident return for the State of Nebraska, married filing separately. Married, filing separately Nebraska returns may be filed when one taxpayer is a resident or partial-year resident while the other taxpayer is a nonresident and, although a married, filing jointly federal return was filed, they did not elect to file a married, filing jointly Nebraska return.
  • For Iowa, you can file a part-year return and your spouse would file a resident return.
