Independent Contractor- haven't received a 1099-NEC from the only company I contract with

This may be a simple or stupid question, but this is my first year having to file as an independent contractor. I began remote contract work with a company back in June and they only had me submit an I9 form to them. I expected to get a 1099-NEC from them sometime last month, but I haven't received anything yet.

I asked my employer whether or not I should expect a form and they told me I could use their company's EIN to file. Should I have received something, or am I ok to go ahead and file using my own calculations of what they've paid me?

If you did not receive a form 1099-NEC from the company you worked for, you cannot "use their company's EIN to file".

You should file as a sole proprietor on Schedule C. For the IRS, you have a business.

You do not own a business in the common meaning of the word. So in TurboTax answer that you use the cash method, that you do not have an EIN. You use your own name as the business name and your personal address as the business address.

You report the income you received in cash, checks or bank transfers or without a 1099-NEC as self-employed income under Other self-employed income.

  • In business income, just under Type of Income, click on Add Income for this work
  • On the next page, click on the radio button next to Other Self-employed Income
  • Click Continue to enter your income received in cash, checks or bank transfers.

If you have expenses related to this business, you can deduct them.

To report your business income and expenses, you'll need to use TurboTax Deluxe or TurboTax Self-Employed (Online) if you have expenses to deduct or TurboTax Home and Business (CD/Download).
