Question

Is the income my son earned as part of an internship for his university program, which was reported on a 1099-NEC, subject to self-employment taxes?

His internship was not undertaken with the intention of earning pay, but with the intention of earning credits towards his university program and graduation.  He would have undertaken the internship without the pay.  Can this be reported as other income or does he have to pay self-employment taxes?

Report it as Other Income:

  1. Select Federal
  2. Select Wages & Income
  3. Scroll down to Other Common Income and elect to start/update Income from form 1099-NEC.
  4. Enter the 1099-NEC exactly as printed, and then Continue.
  5. Enter the reason you got this money –
  6. On the following screen, Select "This is not money earned as an employee or self-employed individual ..."
