Question

My child (my dependant) earned $900 as a referee in 2024 and received a 1099-NEC as such. Does he need to file taxes or is it below the limit?

Since your child received a 1099-NEC for $900 in earnings, they are considered self-employed. According to IRS guidelines, self-employed individuals must file a tax return if their net earnings from self-employment are $400 or more. Therefore, your child will need to file a tax return for 2024.

To enter a Form 1099-NEC in TurboTax:

  1. Open or continue your return.
  2. Navigate to 1099-NEC:
    • TurboTax Online/Mobile: Go to 1099-NEC.
    • TurboTax Desktop: Search for 1099-NEC and select the Jump to link.
  3. Follow the onscreen instructions. When you’re done, we’ll ask you a few questions and help you through entering any expenses you may have so that you can reduce your taxable income

For more detailed information, you can review this IRS publication and scroll down to self-employed.
