reimbursements through Zelle

I get reimbursement from a friend for his portion of our cell phone bill on Zelle, it amounts to over $600 per year, will I automatically have to file a 1099 even though this is not income?

According to the Zelle website " Zelle® does not report transactions made on the Zelle Network® to the IRS. The law requiring certain payment networks to provide forms 1099K for information reporting does not apply to the Zelle Network®." Since this is just personal money being reimbursed to you there is no need to report this to the IRS.

The law is clear that money received as a gift or reimbursement of a share of a meal should not be reported on a 1099-K. But mistakes may happen.

Next year, if you erroneously receive a 1099-K, you will have to contact the payment app company to request they send a correction to the IRS. This could be time consuming and affect how fast your return will finish being processed.
