I/m trying to make sure I fill out self-employment taxes correctly. I did not receive a 1099 so I think I'm supposed to file a schedule C?  What credits can I get for self-employment? How can I reduce the amount I owe for state taxes?

When you report self-employment income on IRS Form 1040 Schedule C, self-employment taxes should be generated on Schedule SE.  Verify the numbers by viewing the tax return as follows:

    • Down the left side of the screen, click on Tax Tools.
    • Click on Tools.
    • Under Other helpful links, click on View Tax Summary.
    • Down the left side of the screen, click on Preview My 1040 to see the actual tax return that you prepared.
    • Down the left side of the screen, click Back to return.

There are COVID-19 related deductions and credits available for self-employment income.  See here.

Self-employment income should carry forward to your state tax return so any deductions from self-employment income will also carry forward to the state tax return.

To access self-employment income in TurboTax Online Self-Employed, follow these steps.

    • Click on Income & Expenses across the top of the screen.
    • Under Your income and expenses you will find Self-employment income and expenses.
    • Click on Edit/Add or Start to the right.
    • TurboTax will ask questions and guide you in establishing your self-employment entity.
