Should I file a 1099-NEC received for a required college co-op experience?

Co-op work is required credit for my college degree.  I paid tuition.  I received a 1099-NEC for the work.  How is this treated?

If you performed work for a company as a co-op student and you received Form 1099-NEC reporting your income, you need to report that income as self-employment income on Schedule C.  The company was treating you as an independent contractor and not their employee.

 

Entering the information on the Form 1099-NEC is only the first step.
