Tax refund

  • Hi. I didn't log in my mileage but I drove about 20,000 miles extra as I am a food delivery for doordash. They send me a 1099 NEC for about $12,000. I know that the mileage for the IRS is about 58 cents and that would make it to about  $11,000. My refund with my regular  full time job is about $3000 adding my 1099. How much more (ballpark) shall I get if I was to report my mileage without a log.

First of all, claiming business miles for driving your personal vehicle without a log is not a good idea.  If your return were to be audited, the IRS would require documentation for the miles claimed on your return.

Without knowing more information about your overall tax return, no one here can give you an estimate for any additional refund you may receive if you were to try to claim business miles against your self-employed income.  However, based on the scenario you gave, you would add approximately $1000 to your taxable income which would also be subject to self-employment tax.  Therefore, your bottom-line refund amount may actually decrease.
