To be eligible for the qualified business income deduction must I have a self employed business?

If I am employed by a business that qualifies but do not have a self employed business am I still eligible for the Qualified Business Income deduction?

Not necessarily.  You could be the owner of an S corporation, partner in a partnership, trusts & estates might be eligible.

 

Also, some REIT dividends might be eligible and PTP income (publicly traded partnerships).

Income earned by providing services as an employee is not eligible for the deduction.
