Question

Union paid a death benefit and sent a 1099-NEC. Turbo tax wants to consider it self employment. The payment was not the result of any employment.

You need to enter the 1099-NEC in the Other Common Income section in TurboTax. After you enter it, you will see a screen where you can indicate that the income is not self-employment income as you see here:
