Uploading 2020 taxes to 2021 Turbo Tax online version

I filed 2020 too late to use the online version and was told I had to use the desktop version.

After using the online version for almost 10 years, I lost the feature where it brings in the previous tax year's numbers as you fill out the return.

I signed into turbo tax online this year and it "looked like" 2020 was in there. As I realized it was not showing me 2020 to compare 2021 to, I searched and found out that you CAN upload one year from the desktop version to the online version but I cannot find instructions on how to do that.

Looking to upload either a pdf for my 2020 to the online turbo tax OR find the desktop 2020 file and upload that for the online system to reference.

Any help please? Very frustrating

Thank you for the quick reply.

I want to upload a .tax file instead of a pdf but I cannot seem to locate the .tax file. When I sign into Turbo Tax it only gives me a pdf option. The pdf option only reads personal date and AGI but I want more of the 2020 data.

How do I get the .tax file to allow the online version to read more of the tax file data?

You won't be able to transfer a PDF from the Turbo Tax Desktop program, it must be a tax data file with a filename extension .tax2020.

You will need to have the .tax2020 file on your computer. If you used the Desktop program last year here’s How to transfer into the Online version, expand the blue link if you used the CD/download last year........

If you already started an online return you will have to clear it and start over to transfer. How to clear and start over

Here's an idea. Do you still have 2020 installed? Try opening 2020 program and see if you can get your 2020 return to show up in it. Go to FILE - OPEN. Then save it again with a name and place you can find. Go to File - Save As.
