US Citizen Working as Independent Contractor for Overseas Company

Hello -

As the title states, I work in the United States as a contractor for a company with headquarters in Finland. Outside of me, there is no US presence. I invoice them once a month and they pay me my gross monthly rate. I pay estimated quarterly taxes every quarter to make sure the IRS isn't mad at me 🙂

Question: should I expect my company to send me a 1099-NEC for my work? Or will I just report it as "Other Income" as stated in a comment in this thread.

Any advice on the subject would be appreciated as I have found very few answers through Google.

No. You will not receive a form 1099-NEC from the overseas company. Form 1099-NEC is a US tax form used by US companies only.

You report the income you received in cash, checks or bank transfers or without a 1099-NEC as self-employed income under Other self-employed income.

  • In business income, just under Type of Income, click on Add Income for this work
  • On the next page, click on the radio button next to Other Self-employed Income
  • Click Continue to enter your income received in cash, checks or bank transfers.
