Question

When I am trying to add a 1099-NEC form, two lines come up and I am not sure why? The self employment one fills with my income and the income from form 1099 says $0.

This seems backwards - I am not self-employed. I work for a business and they do not tax my income, so I have a 1099-NEC.

When you are not paid as an employee receiving a W-2 you are considered a contractor and are indeed self-employed.  Am I considered self-employed? explains the situations the IRS considers self-employment.

To correct your 1099-NEC entry in TurboTax Online please follow these steps:

  1. Within your return in TurboTax Online search for 1099-NEC.
  2. Click the Jump to link in the search results.
  3. Delete the 1099-NEC line with the trash can icon.
  4. Click on Tax Tools on the left side of the screen.
  5. Click on Delete a Form
  6. Scroll down to your 1099-NEC and click Delete if it is still there.

This will eliminate the $0 1099-NEC.  Be sure to review What self-employed expenses can I deduct? to help reduce your business income and lessen your taxes.
