Question

When I enter in info about my 1099-MISC Turbo Tax thinks I'm self-employed. But I'm not and I don't have answers for the self-employment questions. What am I doing wrong?

The 1099-MISC I received was for a bonus from my regular employer.

Your employer should have paid your bonus on your W-2.  The payment is subject to income tax, Social Security tax and Medicare tax and the self-employment questions will compute these taxes.  This TurboTax Help states:

Other Tax Liabilities

In some cases, you might have additional tax liabilities on the income from your bonus. For example, you will likely have to pay:

  • The 6.2% Social Security tax on any portion of your bonus that's below the $142,800 Social Security cap for tax year 2021.
  • The 1.45% Medicare tax.
