It depends what kind of misc income it is.

To enter a 1099-MISC for miscellaneous income in TurboTax:

    1. Open or continue your return
    2. Select Search and search for 1099-misc
    3. Select Jump to 1099-misc
    4. Answer Yes to Did you get a 1099-MISC?
      • If you already entered a 1099-MISC, on the 1099-MISC Summary screen select Add Another 1099-MISC
    5. Enter the info from your form into the corresponding boxes
      • If you need to enter boxes 4–6 or 8–17, select My form has other info in boxes 1–18 to expand the form

To enter a 1099-MISC for rental properties and royalties (Schedule E) in TurboTax: Search for rental income and expenses and select the Jump to link.

To enter a 1099-MISC for farm income and farm rental in TurboTax: Search for farm income and select the Jump to link.

When posting the 1099-MISC it may or may not be subject to self-employment tax.  As you post the information in the interview, there are three main questions that determine:

    • How closely the income matches your job.
    • How often you do these types of things, and
    • Did you have an intent to earn money?

     Under Federal

    1. Select Wages & Income
    2. Scroll to Other Common Income
    3. Select FORM 1099-MISC
    4. Post your information and continue through the interview.
    5. There are three key questions that will determine if this is self employment income.
    6. Did the 1099-MISC involve work that's like "Your" main job?
      1. You can tell by looking at the basic skills involved in both the work you did to get this 1099-MISC or 1099-NEC and the work you do at your main job. If these skills are similar, then this 1099-MISC work was like your main job.
    7. How often did "You" get income for 1099-MISC?
      1. This is to determine how regularly you do these types of things.
    8. Did the 1099-MISC involve an intent to earn money?
      1. Usually, hobbies or interests do not involve an intent to earn money or make a profit.
      2. Having a profit motive means that you intend to earn more in revenue from the activity than you incur in expenses. It doesn't mean you'll necessarily earn a profit. It just means that that's your intent.
