Question

Can i deduct utility costs for business use of home when I split the utility cost with the landlord each month and the bills are in their name? I am a sole proprietorship

Yes, you can. But you need to have receipt or record to prove you pay portion of utility expense in case Canada Revenue Agency(CRA) requires.

(For example, bank statement to prove you paid utility expense monthly)

But you might need to talk to your landlord first you are claiming the utility expense. If you claim it means he has to report rental income too which I am not sure if he is reporting or not.

    Thank you for choosing TurboTax.
