Employees and self-employed individuals can deduct moving expenses from their employment or self-employment income earned at the new location. Students can only deduct moving expenses from the taxable portion of their awards (scholarships, fellowships, bursaries, certain prizes, or research grants), or from their employment income earned at the new location.
Note for couples: The CRA allows couples to split moving expenses. If you split expenses between you and your spouse, only claim the portion of expenses that your partner isn’t claiming. It’s usually beneficial for the higher-earning spouse claim all moving expenses.
