Hi

My income comes from CA but have a residence in AZ which collects rental income. I have residence in CA too.

I also pre paid AZ taxes.

Do i need to file taxes in both CA and AZ?

DO I need to file form 309?

How do I get refund or adjust the tax pre payment from AZ?

Yes, if you had income sourced in Arizona, you need to file a nonresident Arizona personal tax return. There will be a question in the Arizona state interview regarding state taxes that you paid. Enter your pre-paid taxes in this section.

As a California resident, you will need to file a California state tax return as well.

If you complete your nonresident Arizona state interview before starting the California state return, TurboTax will adjust your state returns for any credits due for taxes paid in another state. If Form 309 is required, it will be included in your Arizona return.

I only have rental income in AZ and my primary income is from CA.

How do I make sure I am filing under non-resident AZ? I started the CA before as thats where my primary income is from. Should i start a second return to fix it?

If you live in CA and are filing a Non-Resident return for AZ, you will see the questions in the first couple of screens when you start the AZ return to let you verify that you are filing a non-resident return. It will give you the option to change it if it is saying anything other than Non-Resident.

If you only started your CA return, just do not do anything more with it until you complete the AZ return and then you can go back to CA , walk through ALL the questions again and complete that return.
