Dependent adult child: Florida resident. Temporarily Living in NJ but working in NYC. How to file?

I am a bit confused on how to file taxes in 2025-2026.

 

Full-time college, Dependent child (Florida resident) will work for 6 weeks in NYC but will live temporarily in company-provided housing in NJ. Pay is estimated to be between 5K-10K (but could be less than 5K).

Does child need to file taxes in NJ, NY, both NJ & NY or FL only (no state income tax). Will pay influence whether or not state taxes will have to be filed?

    @sunshinejoe you pay taxes where you work and then where you live. 

     

    So since the student will be working in NY,  and the standard deduction (2024) is $3100, he would have to file a NY State NON-RESIDENT tax return (and maybe NYC) since his income is expected to exceed the NYS standard deduction. 

     

    The student is not a resident of New Jersey, so there is nothing to report there.
