Question

Do I have to include a copy of my 1099-nec for my state return? Michigan

I received a 1099-NEC this year and I noticed that it has a Copy 2.  In the copy 2 it says "To be filed with recipient's state income tax return, when required".  I live in Michigan and all the information I could find is for issuers of 1099-NECs, not recipients.

Does this mean I need to include the document with my state tax return? If so, am I able to do that electronically with TurboTax?

No, it means you ENTER the information on the state return.

When you use TurboTax, the 1099-NEC you enter in the federal return section gets forwarded to the state return, so you only enter it once.

The state has a copy of the 1099-NEC so you don't need to send them your copy.
