Question

How do I file MA and/or CT state returns when I was a college student in MA then started working there after graduation?

I was a college student in MA from January to May 2024. After my graduation (June to December), I began working in MA with permanent residency. My previous state (parents' residence) was Connecticut. I had W2 income in MA both before and after graduation. In CT, I had no earned income, only small capital gains and (net) carryover losses. What state return(s) should I file and in what order? Thank you.

You can file a part-year return for Connecticut and Massachusetts.  For the first part of the year, your Massachusetts will be nonresident income and you will report it on your Connecticut return and claim a credit for the taxes paid to another state.  Complete the Massachusetts return first so that you can claim the Connecticut credit.   Please post if you have questions while you are entering the information!

Thanks. I ended up doing the CT part-year and MA non-resident/part-year resident with schedule R/NR (to separate all income and gain/loss into MA part-year, MA non-resident).
