Question

I live in GA but worked in CO . On my W2 it’s showing the same income for both states even though I only worked in one . How can I file this ?

You will file a CO return as nonresident. You will file your GA resident return. Both states have been notified by your employer of the income and received w2s.

For the program, on the w2 entry:

  • you will enter the CO income and tax paid
  • leave the GA wages section blank

All income earned as a resident is taxed in GA and they will give you a credit for the tax on the same income being taxed by CO.

  1. Prepare the CO nonresident return first.
  2. Then prepare the GA return for the proper credit.

You get credit for the lower state tax on the lowest taxable amount.

  • Each state calculates taxable income differently.
  • Each state has its own tax rate/ system.
  • You get the lowest of both categories as a tax credit.

If GA tax was also withheld, enter it under federal deductions and credits, Estimates and other taxes paid.
