Please note that if you have a Form W-2 showing wages earned in Puerto
Rico in Box 15 (displayed as “PR”), TurboTax does not support state tax returns from Puerto Rico. You can
still file your federal and Georgia tax returns; however, you would need to file the Puerto
Rico state return directly with the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico.
I have a question. I live in Puerto Rico but I’m a therapist and all my clients are in Georgia, therefore I get paid out of Georgia. Do I need to file Georgia state tax or just federal? Can I file using turbo tax because I don’t have any work for Puerto Rico. The only thing I have is a house in Puerto Rico
Assuming you live in Puerto Rico and this is your only source of income derived while residing in Puerto Rico because you meet bona fide resident requirements, you may not have a U.S. or Georgia income tax filing requirement.
You would only need to file a nonresident Georgia return if you actually performed the work within the state. Since it sounds like you reside full time in Puerto Rico, unless you have any income as part of your duties as a U.S. Government official, you would meet the filing exemption as listed in Publication 1321. If you have other sources of income such as capital gains or rental income from the United States, the filing requirements will differ.
This resource also has some information you may find useful. Be sure to check with Puerto Rico to make sure you meet any tax filing requirements if you are considered a bona fide resident.
