I spoke with a TT "professional" and they messed up my state returns. I live in NJ and work in PA. I owe NJ taxes and I get a refund from PA. They did it backwards

When you say you "spoke with a TT professional" we do not know if that means you used online Live and had tax expert help with the return or if you mean you called in and talked to someone at customer support once.   Please clarify that.   The way the state returns should have been prepared-----first the NON-resident return for PA--where you worked--- should have been prepared, and next the resident state return for NJ should have been prepared.   If the state returns were prepared in the wrong order that led to the problem you are having.

NJ residents are not subject to PA income tax on their W-2 salaries or wages.  The two states have tax reciprocity.

If PA taxes were mistakenly withheld from your pay, then in order to obtain a refund you must file a non-resident PA tax return on which you declare zero PA income, in order to obtain a refund.  You cannot claim a credit on your NJ return for taxes incorrectly withheld for PA; you must claim a refund from PA.

Your income remains fully taxable by your home state of NJ.

File PA Form REV-419 with your PA employer to prevent PA withholding in future.  Here's a link to that form:
