I am using 2024 TT Premiere doing NY tax return. In doing the tax credit for tax paid to New Jersey, I keep getting a message "Tax amount should not be greater than tax imposed etc" on line 24a of IT-112 R. The New Jersey tax as calculated was $7909 and I used that same amount on line 24a. I cannot get rid of that error message. I need HELP, I spent a lot of hours searching for the answer in the Community Discussions and all in vain. Should you need more info, you may reach me at [phone number removed] (my land line) or [phone number removed] (cell phone). I have been preparing tax return for me and my family and have been depended upon Turbo Tax software.

So you are a resident of NYS, right? And you worked in NJ?

Did you enter your non-resident state (NJ) first, then your resident state (NYS)?

You said "used that same amount on line 24a. " Did you actually enter this amount into the NYS interview? Because had you done NJ first, then NYS, the tax would have carried over automatically. It's safer that way.

I say this because that Resident Tax Credit is not simply the tax assessed by the other state, but

The amount of income tax imposed is the amount of income tax you calculated on your return for the other taxing authority minus any credits allowed against this tax. Do not include use tax or the tax on income that is taxed by the other taxing authority but is not taxed by New York State. Do not enter tax withheld, estimated tax payments, or payments of balances due on this line. If you paid tax to both a state and one or more local governments within that state, enter the total amount of income taxes paid to both the state and to one or more local governments within the state.
