Do I need to file state taxes for Montana if:

- I live and work in Texas.

- I own Royalties in Montana

- The Payers for my Royalties are from a company in Texas

- The Payers 1099-MISC to me have blocks 2, 17, & 18 filled out with Block 17 showing MT.

Per the Montana Business & Income Tax Division, if you were a nonresident who received Montana source income, and you had a requirement to file a federal tax return, then you must file a Montana income tax return. Since your royalties are in Montana, you will need to file a Montana return.
