Moved from CA to NY, do I get the credit for taxes paid to other state?
I moved from CA to NY in April 2024. I received a CA W-2 for $36,000 of wages earned from the CA employer. I received a NY W-2 for $90,000 of wages earned from the NY employer (but line 16 shows $5,000 of CA wages with $75 of CA state tax withholding). I reported all CA income on CA return ($36,000 + $5,000).
On the NY return, am I eligible to take the credit for taxes paid to another state? On form IT-112-R, Part 1 Income and Adjustments, do I enter the total CA amounts in that column ($41,000), or just the $5,000 that showed on my NY W-2? If I enter the total amounts from CA return, I get a $2,200 credit, but it seems like Form IT-203 line 46 already reduces the total tax on all income to calculate only the NY portion. Is it correct that I get a $2,200 credit for taxes paid to CA?
Any advice would be appreciated.
