North Carolina State tax filing

Hello

I just filed my taxes on Turbo.

I notice each year I owe State taxes. This year even more!!!

My question is Do I pay social security tax on my D400 form?

I see a amount there?

Also I have my withholding set to 1 for tax and 2 for federal.... Should I make federal 1 also.

It's just me

I did make more interest on some banking VD's Money market amount increased . Could that be why.

My social security total is less than 25,000. so I know that is not taxable for federal.

I'm a bit confused.

Hope Ive not been doing my taxes wrong these past 3 years on Turbo.

Just filling what I have

Thanks

Susan

NC does not tax Social Security benefits.

We cannot see your tax return.  The most common reason for owing state tax is that you did not have enough state tax withheld from your paychecks during the year.   Double check all of the amounts you entered from tax documents such as your W-2's---look carefully at boxes 16 and 17.  Look for misplaced decimals and extra zeros.

Print a copy of 2023 and 2024 state returns and compare them side by side, line by line to spot the difference(s).

NC forms remove any SS income that was included in the Federal AGI.

i.e. if box 6b on the Federal form 1040 has no $$ in it, then none of your SS wasn't included in the Federal AGI in the first place...and since the NC starting point is the Federal AGI, there would be nothing to remove from NC income, since the was no SS in that income in the first place.

IF box 6b on your Federal 1040 has a $$ amount in it, then that same amount will end up being removed from NC income.

@Realartist20

That just mean the software is working right.

The line 6b $$ on the form 1040 was included in Federal AGI.

The same $$ amount on line 9 of the NC form D-400 means that is being subtracted from NC income, because NC doesn't tax SS income.
