Question

Ohio, again

I took a $15,000 withdrawal from an inherited IRA and as part of the transaction has the brokerage set aside $750 for state taxes in Ohio. This figure is correctly displayed in Box 14 of the 1099-R.  Box 16 was left blank by the brokerage, which I understand might also be correct for Ohio.  However, because of the value in Box 14, TurboTax is not accepting the blank, even though there is $15,000 in Box 2a.

The problem seems to resolve itself when I add $15,000 to Box 16, but since this is not required by Ohio, I am concerned about trigger some kind of error in the Ohio taxes.

You did correctly.

TurboTax will flag an error if box 16 is smaller than box 14. You can safely fill box 16 with the amount in box 2a.

Add $15,000 to Box 16, at the W-2 screen.  The brokerage did the wrong thing by not putting the $15K in box 16 to start with.
