Hi,

I live in NY and my work is in VA. I indicated in my W4 that my address is in NY. When my W2 came it showed only $5 for NY taxes and about $3k for VA taxes. What do I do now because I don’t want to owe. I’m not sure why my W2 will have so much tax taken into VA and not NY which is my actual address and tax state. Thank you for help!

Virginia will tax the work performed in the state. ‌You will file a non-resident return for the work performed in Virginia, then you will take a credit for taxes paid to other states on your New York return.

Here's how to claim the credit for taxes paid to other states:

1. First prepare the non-resident VA return (don't skip this step or the credit might not populate correctly)

2. Next, prepare the resident NY return.

3. TurboTax will compute the credit for taxes paid in other states.
