Dear Tax Consultant

I am going to live and work on w2 in Illinois throughout 2025 while my wife lives and works on w2 in Arizona with our one dependent son . So far we have been living and filing taxes together in AZ as MFJ ( both Fed and AZ State ).

As I need to choose the proper status in my new W4 in 2025, I need to your advise if it is fine to choose MFS for both of us in our respective w4 OR MFJ is still a better choice for both of us. Also what is the filing requirements for both of us in AZ and/or IL. Please advise. Thank you!

You can still file jointly and that’s almost always the better choice. Filing requirements for each state can be found on their respective websites.

Two things to be aware of:

The filing status you use on your W-4 is strictly for tax withholding purposes.  You are not obligated to use the same filing status on your actual tax return that you used on your W-4.

Arizona is a community property state.  If you file MFS in AZ, you must split your wife's income between your two AZ returns.
